Octopuses With Three Hearts Put to the Test for Speed Running (Popular Science)

Abstract:
Octopuses are known for their impressive array of abilities, from camouflage to high-level intelligence and complex social behaviors. One of the most curious and fascinating traits they possess is the ability to have four hearts. Typically, octopuses have two regular hearts and two accessory hearts. However, when faced with a stressful situation or in times of extreme blood loss, they can temporarily get by with just one heart
This study investigates the physiological strain this extra beating heart puts on octopuses’ system by administering a series of challenges to an octopus with only one regular heart and no accessory hearts.
Methodology:
For this study, we used a single male octopus that had been rescued from a local aquarium and was found living outside in a park. We were unable to determine its exact age or genetic background, but it appeared to be in good physical condition, free of any obvious injuries or diseases. To minimize any stressors, we trained the octopus by providing food rewards for repeated tasks and gradually increasing the difficulty levels.
All experiments conducted on the octopus were approved by the local research ethics committee.
Results:
Our results demonstrate that an octopus with just one heart operating at full capacity allows it to effectively complete tasks requiring high speed
