They used a combination of satellite imagery, camera phones, and local knowledge to track rebel movements across Iraq and Syria during the Arab Spring. Their statistical model caused controversy online and offline when they claimed they had won the Nobel Prize for this work.
This achievement received a lot of publicity back in 2010AC. One blogger stated that “[author] adds another chapter of history to this controversial topic of terrorist fundraising.” While others praised them for their innovative approach using “big data” analytics.
