In the early years of manned space exploration
there were six famous suicide missions into space that left an everlasting impression on the history books. The men aboard the Gemini 3, Voyager 1, and Apollo 13 missions each faced incredible challenges and some even faced meeting their own demise. However, among them all there was one mission that pushed the boundaries of human endurance and speed. The Martian Express: Astronauts Blast Across the Solar System within a few weeks – a technological marvel turned human endurance test, known as NASA’s Project Mercury in 1961.
Pioneering Missiles:
On May 5th, 1959, just 15 years after the launch of the first artificial satellite Sputnik and about eight years before President Kennedy declared space exploration “the New Landscape of our Century,” President Eisenhower mandated NASA to develop a spacecraft capable of getting astronauts to and from Earth with two-way communications capability. The objective was set, and with seven years less than 100 billion dollars in total expenditures NASA would strive to posture into orbit the first American astronaut “at a minimum, 250 miles per hour above Earth’s surface.” To achieve such a goal meant acquiring new technologies at rapid speed, and NASA’s rocketry department set out to pioneer new methods that would push exhaust speeds to over 2000mph rapidly.
